Watching this video makes me think about the book The Craftsman by Richard Sennett. To me this is one of the most important books I’ve read the last few years. It stresses the importance of craft for our society. When Sennett talks about craftsmen he is not only referring to furniture makers or potters, but also to less obvious professions. The basic principles of craft – learning through doing with the utmost attentiveness – can also be applied to any other profession. And, according to Sennett, they should be. Whether you’re working with computers or you are a salesperson in a clothing shop, you should do everything you do with attention and dedication. So besides the more obvious crafts of knitting scarves of building violins, there is also the craft of being hospitable when working as a waiter or that of being a plumber.
Sennett ends his book by guiding readers to maybe the most important craft of all: the craft of being kind to others.
